🎭 Arts and rounds

Stark County • March 14, 2025

Good morning, Stark County. The arts are alive and fighting for $1.4 million in Stark County as ArtsinStark launches its annual fundraising campaign. This cultural lifeline supports seven major arts organizations while distributing grants to community programs—a vital effort in a time when another cultural institution, movie theaters, battles for survival against streaming services. Despite national statistics showing 66% of Americans prefer watching at home, local gems like the Canton Palace Theatre continue showcasing the irreplaceable magic of shared cinematic experiences.

Meanwhile, a deadly intersection at Mount Pleasant Street and Arlington Avenue is finally getting a $5.4 million safety upgrade. The new roundabout, scheduled for construction in 2027, aims to tame this notorious crossroads that once topped county crash reports with 35 incidents in just three years. With federal funding covering most costs, this will become Jackson Township's fifth traffic circle—proof that sometimes the solution to moving forward safely is going in circles.

🎭 ArtsinStark aims to raise $1.4 million for local arts. The nonprofit organization kicked off its annual fundraising campaign to support artists, arts education, and major cultural institutions throughout Stark County. Funds will benefit seven major arts organizations, maintain the Cultural Center for the Arts, and provide grants for community programs. Last year's successful campaign raised the same amount—their highest mark in four years—and distributed over $630,000 in grants. The campaign runs through May with volunteers reaching out to businesses, individuals, and community partners.

🎬 Movie theaters fight for survival in streaming era. Five years after COVID-19, the movie theater industry faces significant challenges with screen numbers dropping 5.3% nationwide. Filmmaker Sean Baker made a passionate "battle cry" at the Oscars for preserving the theatrical experience against the threat of streaming. A recent poll found 66% of Americans prefer waiting for streaming releases rather than visiting theaters, with box office numbers still $2-3 billion below pre-pandemic levels. Despite these challenges, historic venues like the Canton Palace Theatre continue to highlight the unique communal experience that streaming can't replicate.
