Good morning, Scioto County. As America approaches its 250th birthday, Lawrence County is getting a head start on the celebrations with the unveiling of their new commemorative flag. The patriotic initiative doesn't stop there—silver coins, coloring books, and community involvement opportunities are all part of the county's America250 committee efforts, showcasing how local pride connects to our national heritage.

Meanwhile, critical community services hang in the balance as Lawrence County Developmental Disabilities faces potential program closures without levy passage. For families like Melissa Welch's, whose 26-year-old son with Down Syndrome relies on these services, the November ballot represents much more than a tax issue. On a brighter note, area teens have a unique opportunity to master essential life skills—from sewing to basic car maintenance—at Canter's Cave 4-H Camp's upcoming weekend event designed to prepare young people for real-world challenges.

🇺🇸 Lawrence County unveils new flag celebrating America's 250th birthday. The flags were presented to county commissioners during a recent meeting by Rich Donahue, chairman of the county's America250 committee. Silver commemorative coins have also been ordered despite rising silver prices, with 250 featuring the state logo and 100 with the county logo. Additionally, proofs for America250 coloring books have arrived for review, and the committee is actively seeking volunteers from the eastern part of the county. A meeting for potential volunteers is scheduled for Monday at Ohio University Southern.

♿ Lawrence County's disability services face closure without levy passage. The Lawrence County Developmental Disabilities agency is campaigning for a 2.5 mill continuing levy on the November 4 ballot. Without new funding, they would be forced to close Open Door School and end Early Intervention programs after the 2025-26 school year. Superintendent Julie Monroe noted the agency has already cut over $1 million since their last levy failed in 2019, and hasn't passed new funding since 2006. Parents like Melissa Welch, whose 26-year-old son with Down Syndrome participates in LCDD programs, emphasize these services are vital for their loved ones.
