Good morning, Scioto County. Shawnee State University is stretching its academic roots eastward with a significant new campus expansion coming to Chillicothe in 2026. This partnership with Adena Health represents more than just new classroomsโit's a strategic investment in addressing our region's growing healthcare workforce needs, offering everything from general education to graduate business courses in facilities designed to nurture the next generation of medical professionals.
Meanwhile, autumn traditions are in full swing across the Ohio Valley. The iconic Kenova Pumpkin House is seeking helping hands to transform 3,000 gourds into a glowing Halloween spectacle, while on the gridiron, Fairland Dragons are preparing for what could be the ultimate underdog story against powerhouse Ironton Tigers. History shows these matchups often deliver more drama than the statistics might suggestโperhaps another chapter in their storied rivalry awaits this Friday at Tanks Memorial Stadium.

๐ซ Shawnee State expands with new Chillicothe campus this spring. The university will offer general education and graduate business courses at the PACCAR Medical Educational Center beginning January 2026. This expansion stems from a partnership with Adena Health announced in October 2024 to address the region's growing demand for healthcare professionals. Science courses for health programs will be available at Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center, while the C.H. Lute School of Business will offer MBA courses. The location eventually plans to develop nursing and other health profession programs.
๐ Kenova Pumpkin House seeks volunteers to carve 3,000 Halloween gourds. The historic Victorian home in Wayne County invites helpers of all ages to assist with scooping and carving between October 18-24. Owner Ric Griffith recommends wearing old clothes due to the messy work involving bleach for rinsing pumpkins. Nearly 1,500 volunteers participate annually, with many school and church groups regularly lending a hand. The display, which began in 1978 and attracts 30,000 visitors yearly, will be viewable through October 31, with October 25 marked as the prime viewing date.
๐ Underdog Dragons face uphill battle against mighty Ironton Tigers. Fairland (3-4) will need to overcome defensive struggles as they prepare to face the dominant Fighting Tigers (6-1) who outscore opponents by an average of 44.4 to 9.2 points. Despite the challenge, Fairland has historically played Ironton tough, including a stunning 2017 victory and taking them to overtime in 2021. The Dragons will rely on sophomore quarterback Owen Burcham's speed and senior Davin Murray's defensive prowess against Ironton's powerful rushing attack led by Zayne Williams and Kayden Edwards. Coach Mike Jackson remains hopeful his young team can "shock everybody in the Tri-State" when they meet Friday at Tanks Memorial Stadium.
