Scioto County • October 1, 2025
Good morning, Scioto County. Unsung heroes are receiving their well-deserved spotlight across our region this week. Keith Eric Pitts, whose "thousand hands" approach transformed the Community Action Committee of Pike County into a $39 million beacon of hope, has become just the 24th recipient of the prestigious Marvin J. Huston General's Award. Meanwhile, Lawrence County's Amanda Cleary joins an elite group of 2025 Jenco Award winners, proving that extraordinary community impact often happens beyond the timecard.
History stands tall at Shawnee State Park, where a new marker honors the remarkable legacy of Company 1545. These Black World War I veterans, who worked through the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, transformed rugged terrain into the award-winning recreational paradise millions enjoy today. Despite facing segregation as one of four Black CCC camps in the forest, their perseverance created Roosevelt Lake, trails, and infrastructure that continue to serve as a testament to their enduring contributions.
