Scioto County • September 16, 2025
Good morning, Scioto County. History is literally being written on our doorstep as two significant Underground Railroad sites in neighboring Greenup County receive national recognition. The Greenup County Slave Revolt Site, commemorating 55 brave souls who revolted in 1829, and the Isaac Downey Escape Site will soon join the National Park Service's prestigious Network to Freedom. These landmarks represent powerful chapters in our regional heritage and will be celebrated with marker dedications later this month as part of the expanding Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tour.
On the gridiron, Ironton's unstoppable backfield duo has fans buzzing after "The Diesel" Williams and "The Steam" Edwards steamrolled their way to six touchdowns in a dominant 55-21 victory. Meanwhile, the village of Peebles adds another feather to its cap as Ohio's newest Buckeye Trail Town, highlighting the natural beauty and rich history that make our Appalachian foothills a destination worth celebrating.

π£οΈ Kentucky's Underground Railroad history gets national recognition in Greenup County. Two significant sites - a slave revolt location and an escape site - have been added to the National Park Service's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Greenup County Slave Revolt Site commemorates 55 enslaved people who revolted in 1829, while the Isaac Downey Escape Site honors a man who fled from Globe Furnace ironworks in 1837. Both locations will be celebrated with marker dedications on September 24 as part of the expanding Appalachian Freedom Heritage Tour, which will eventually feature 27 verified historical sites across Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
π Ironton's dynamic duo dominates in 55-21 football rout. The Fighting Tigers crushed Canisius Crusaders as running backs Zayne "The Diesel" Williams and Kayden "The Steam" Edwards combined for 284 yards and six touchdowns on Saturday. Ironton's defense effectively contained Canisius star Elijah Kimble, limiting the Division 1 prospect to just 74 yards on 25 carries despite his two touchdowns. The Tigers' ground attack was unstoppable, amassing 374 total rushing yards while their defense consistently outplayed Canisius' larger offensive line. Ironton remains undefeated at 4-0 and will host Jackson next Friday.
π₯Ύ Ohio village becomes 22nd official Buckeye Trail Town. Peebles, nestled in the Appalachian Foothills, will celebrate this designation with a ceremony on October 1, 2025, at the Floyd & Mae McCoy Memorial Park. The village is home to the Great Serpent Mound, a 1,348-foot-long effigy that sits atop an ancient meteorite impact site. Founded in 1881, Peebles has a rich history including hosting a Civilian Conservation Corps camp for African American veterans who contributed to local conservation efforts. The Buckeye Trail Town program recognizes communities that welcome hikers while promoting local tourism and economic development.
