Scioto County • July 23, 2025
Good morning, Scioto County. Our community has lost two vibrant souls this week, each leaving behind colorful legacies at just 56 years of age. Walter "Jeff" Logan, affectionately known as "Jeff the Chef," painted life with bold strokes of adventure and family devotion, while Glenda Watts filled her days with dancing, caregiving, and cherishing moments with the grandchildren who were "her life." Their parallel journeys, both ending on July 12, remind us how deeply individual lives can touch those around them.
In stark contrast to these celebrations of life, the courtroom delivered its own final brushstroke in a tragic case that shook our region last year. Gage Smith received life without parole for deliberately disabling his vehicle's brakes before a crash that claimed four lives, including three children. Judge Kuhn's severe sentence reflects the devastating ripple effects when recklessness intersects with innocent lives.

🚗 Reckless driver gets life without parole for killing four people. Gage Smith, 24, was found guilty of murder after deliberately disabling his car's brakes before a fatal crash in Ohio. The May 2024 collision killed three children and one adult when Smith lost control while driving under the influence of drugs. Investigators discovered Smith had "crimped" a brake line, was using bald tires, and had never possessed a driver's license. Judge Mark Kuhn sentenced Smith to 60 years to life for his "horrendous conduct" that caused inevitable death.
