Scioto County • February 4, 2025
Good morning, Scioto County. Talk about going big or going home - South Point village just rolled out nearly a million dollars for their newest firefighting beast, proving that sometimes the best things in life come with a hefty price tag and a really long ladder. This mechanical marvel joins the fleet just as Lawrence County EMS celebrates an eye-popping milestone of their own, responding to more than 12,000 calls last year - that's enough emergencies to fill a season's worth of "Chicago Fire" episodes.
Meanwhile, April Dawn Gilliam is taking us on a mouth-watering trip down memory lane with her "April Eats Ashland" chronicles, serving up equal portions of nostalgia and new discoveries. Between remembering the glory days of C.J. Maggies and exploring today's culinary scene, she's cooking up the kind of social media content that makes you hungry for both dinner and a dash of local history.

🚒 South Point village secures massive new fire truck for nearly $1 million. The Ohio village made the purchase from Sutphem company, financing the vehicle through a recently passed fire levy. The village will make annual payments of $107,000 over 15 years to cover the truck's $998,995 price tag. Mayor Jeff Gaskin announced the purchase was approved during special January council meetings, where they also awarded a contract to Wilson Excavating for a rehabilitation hospital lift station.
🚑 Lawrence County EMS responds to staggering 12,622 calls in 2024. The ambulance service averaged more than 34 runs per day, with December alone seeing 1,072 calls. Commissioner Dr. Colton Copley, who works as an ER doctor, praised the EMTs' knowledge and quality of care as they reach full staffing levels. Recent staff changes include promoting David Peer to full-time advanced EMT and hiring two new part-time EMTs. The department's growth comes as they continue providing critical emergency services to the community.
