🐴 Horseplay in Kitts Hill

Scioto County • January 1, 2025

Good morning, Scioto County. In an unexpected twist that proves truth is often gentler than social media speculation, the case of the "neglected horse" in Kitts Hill turned out to be nothing more than an adventurous equine who found itself tangled in a briar patch. Sheriff Lawless's investigation revealed a well-cared-for animal whose muddy misadventure had sparked unnecessary controversy, reminding us that sometimes things aren't quite as dramatic as they first appear on Facebook.

On a more serious note, the long shadow cast by Pike County's tragic 2016 murders may finally be nearing resolution. As Jake and Angela Wagner prepare for their January 3rd sentencing, and Billy Wagner's trial location remains in flux, our community inches closer to closure in one of Ohio's most complex criminal cases. It's a sobering reminder that justice, while sometimes slow, continues to move forward.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🐎 Neglected horse drama ends peacefully in Kitts Hill ownership transfer. After public complaints about a horse's condition in Lawrence County, officials investigated and discovered the animal had simply gotten loose into a briar patch. Sheriff Jeff Lawless confirmed the horse was being properly fed and cared for alongside other animals on the property, with its unkempt appearance due to mud and briars rather than neglect. The owner has since cleaned the horse's coat and is now in the process of transferring ownership to a new caretaker. The Lawrence County Humane Society will continue monitoring the situation, though no criminal charges were deemed necessary.

⚖️ Eight murder charges could finally see justice in Pike County. The Wagner family's complex legal saga is nearing a crucial moment, with Jake and Angela Wagner scheduled for sentencing on January 3rd, just days before patriarch Billy's trial. Their plea deals, which helped avoid death penalties, required them to testify in related trials - though it's unclear if they'll still need to testify now that Billy's death penalty is off the table. The case involves the shocking 2016 "execution-style" murders of eight members of the Rhoden and Gilley families. Judge Hein has ruled to move Billy's trial out of Pike County due to intense media coverage, though the new location remains undecided.
