Ross County • July 10, 2025
Good morning, Ross County. Monday was nothing short of a whirlwind for Chillicothe police, who tackled 17 incidents ranging from early morning warrant services to investigations of counterfeit currency at Kingston National Bank. The department's busy day included everything from Walmart theft reports to traffic stops resulting in charges for fictitious plates—a snapshot of the daily challenges our local officers navigate while keeping our community safe.
July marks a significant transition as Chillicothe's Building Department takes the reins on all commercial building oversight previously handled by the county. Meanwhile, the walls of The Pump House Center for the Arts will soon showcase Renaissance-inspired realism as Circleville artist Steven Riggs brings his collection of oil paintings and graphite masterpieces to town. His exhibition opens July 10th with live music and refreshments—a perfect opportunity to appreciate what the artist passionately calls "HIGH ART" in an increasingly modern world.

🚔 Chillicothe police tackle 17 incidents in action-packed Monday. Officers served multiple warrants throughout the day, including one that began at 2:18 a.m. on North Paint Street. Investigations included a counterfeit bill discovered at Kingston National Bank, theft at Walmart, and a protection order violation near Lincoln Park. Traffic stops resulted in charges for fictitious plates and driving under suspension, while officers also responded to a custody dispute, welfare checks, and reports of a stolen phone. The department continues to follow up on several open cases from the busy day.
🏗️ Chillicothe takes control of commercial building oversight starting July 7. The city's Building Department will now handle all commercial building applications, code enforcement, plan reviews, inspections, and occupancy permits that were previously managed by Ross County. This change follows the May 28 passage of City resolution 08-25, which authorized application to the Ohio Board of Building Standards for creating a non-residential building department. Existing projects under Ross County's review will continue until completion. Those with questions can contact the Building Department directly at 740-773-8980.
🎨 Circleville artist brings Renaissance-inspired realism to Chillicothe exhibit. Steven Riggs will showcase his oil paintings, graphite drawings, and watercolors at The Pump House Center for the Arts throughout July, with an opening reception on July 10th featuring live music and refreshments. A professional artist specializing in realistic portraiture in the tradition of Renaissance Masters, Riggs maintains a studio in Circleville where he offers classes and accepts portrait commissions. His exhibited works include "Beau Deese," a graphite drawing of silent film actress Lillian Gish, and "Cherokee Path," an oil painting depicting a wooded trail in North Carolina. Riggs passionately advocates for "HIGH ART," believing excellence in artistic creation has been lost in modern society.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
