Good morning, Ross County. Did you know the iconic McFlurry was actually born in Canada? As the frozen treat celebrates its 30th birthday up north with an exclusive cake-flavored edition, American fans can only look on with envy—a familiar feeling for those who missed out on the recent Cadbury Egg Creme version. While our neighbors enjoy their birthday sprinkles, local sports fans have plenty to savor with nine softball playoff matchups scheduled this week across four divisions, featuring top seeds like Chillicothe and compelling matchups including Miami Trace vs. Unioto.
Meanwhile, change is brewing throughout the county. HomeBuys is breathing new life into the former Big Lots building, seniors can enjoy free laughs at a special screening of "Thelma" on May 19 (RSVP by May 15!), and residents might soon notice a slight bump in their water bills—about 16 cents for minimal users—as the city considers a 2% rate increase to address revenue shortfalls.

🍦 Canada gets exclusive birthday cake McFlurry for iconic dessert's 30th anniversary. The limited-time treat blends vanilla soft serve with frosted cake-flavored cookie dough pieces and birthday cake syrup, commemorating the McFlurry's 1995 Canadian invention. While American fans currently have access to only Oreo and M&M's flavors, there's hope this celebratory flavor might eventually cross the border like previous Canadian exclusives. The birthday cake McFlurry joins other Canada-only offerings like the recent Cadbury Egg Creme McFlurry that left U.S. customers missing out.
⚾ Softball playoffs kick off with a packed week of tournament action. Nine exciting matchups are scheduled across Divisions III, IV, V, and VI, all starting at 5 p.m. (weather permitting). Top-seeded teams like No. 1 Chillicothe await the winners of earlier contests, while lower seeds like No. 21 Oak Hill face challenging road games. The schedule features local rivalries including Miami Trace vs. Unioto and Portsmouth vs. Southeastern, giving fans plenty of postseason softball to enjoy.
🎬 Seniors invited to laugh away stress at free movie event. The Ross County Suicide Prevention Coalition is partnering with Danbarry Cinemas to host "Laughing Out Load!" for adults 55+ on May 19. The event, coinciding with Mental Health Awareness Month and Older Americans Month, will feature the comedy "Thelma" along with free refreshments. Attendees can connect with local resources while enjoying entertainment designed to boost mental health. Space is limited, so interested seniors should RSVP by May 15 by calling (740)649-9767 or (740)-626-7111.
🛍️ HomeBuys is moving into Chillicothe's former Big Lots building. The discount retailer, which sells closeout items from retailers worldwide, received an occupancy permit according to the Ross County Building Department's April report. The month saw 90 total permits issued, including approvals for new businesses like Chillicoffee's brick-and-mortar store and Thunderbird Tattoo. Educational facilities also received permits, with Greenfield High School getting conditional approval for science lab renovations and Pickaway-Ross Career Center updating a classroom lab. Meanwhile, Pike County will see development of a new drug rehab facility in Piketon.
💧 Chillicothe residents face potential water bill hike of 2%. The Water Rate Review Committee has recommended the increase after discovering the city spent more on water and sewer than it earned in revenue. For the lowest water users, this would mean paying approximately $0.16 more on just the water portion of their utility bills. The proposal is currently under review by the city council's utilities committee before advancing to a full council vote. If approved, the rate increase would likely take effect later this summer.
