Now back to the news.
The dark history of our local jails just might make you appreciate modern correctional facilities. Back in 1925, both city and county lockups maintained dreaded "dungeons" for controlling troublesome inmates—windowless solitary cells where even the most defiant prisoners quickly learned compliance. These cramped, shadowy spaces served as powerful behavioral tools, with the mere threat of dungeon time often enough to restore order behind bars.
Looking toward a brighter future, county leaders have unveiled ambitious growth plans spanning the next two decades. From Frankfort's Warrior Wellness Center to Chillicothe's $35 million Yoctangee Park renovation featuring an amphitheater and visitor center, development is booming across the region. Meanwhile, there's encouraging economic news as Ohio's unemployment claims dropped to 5,853 last week, mirroring national trends and suggesting continued stability in our local job market.

📉 Ohio jobless claims show signs of economic stability. Initial unemployment filings in the state dropped to 5,853 for the week ending March 8, down from 6,549 the previous week. This local trend mirrors the national picture, with U.S. claims falling by 2,000 to reach 220,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. While Alaska experienced the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, New Hampshire saw claims plummet by 66.5%. These figures serve as important indicators of layoff activity across different regions of the country.
🏢 "Dungeons" were jail's secret weapon against unruly prisoners. In 1925 Ross County, both city and county jails maintained dark solitary confinement cells to control troublemakers behind bars. The city jail's windowless 6x8 cell was constructed in 1895, while the county's underground dungeon was padded in 1908 for sanitary purposes. These dreaded spaces effectively subdued violent inmates like John Owens, who was placed in "Immell's Dungeon" after threatening guards with an iron wedge. Even the mere threat of dungeon time was enough to make most prisoners instantly compliant.
🏙️ Ross County leaders unveil ambitious plans for community growth. The Chamber of Commerce's State of the Community event brought together local officials to discuss ongoing and future developments. Frankfort Mayor Cavender highlighted plans for the Warrior Wellness Center and village route improvements, while County Commissioner Everson detailed the comprehensive 20-year plan covering everything from land use to transportation. ODOT's Barnitz presented the final Bridge Street project featuring roundabouts, new lanes, and aesthetic upgrades including "pocket parks." Chillicothe Mayor Feeney discussed the $35 million Yoctangee Park renovation project that includes an amphitheater, armory restoration, and visitor center to be completed by 2026.
