🐟 Fishy finances

Ross County • March 10, 2025

Good morning, Ross County. There's a glimmer of economic sunshine breaking through as Ohio's jobless claims dropped to 6,378 last week, reflecting a broader national decline in unemployment filings. This positive trend arrives just as local seafood lovers have something to celebrate – Lenten season has restaurants from Burger King to Red Lobster rolling out special fish dishes, with everything from budget-friendly sandwiches to elaborate Lobsterfest creations appearing on menus across the county.

Meanwhile, Waverly volleyball stars Risner and O'Bryant have spiked their way to first-team All-SOC honors, joining an impressive roster of local athletic talent recognized for excellence on the court. The news isn't as bright for shoppers at Advance Auto Parts, however, as the retailer's massive restructuring plan includes closing its Chillicothe location among 700 stores nationwide – a reminder that even as employment numbers improve, our retail landscape continues to evolve.

πŸ“‰ Ohio jobless claims fall as national numbers also decline. Initial unemployment filings in the state dropped to 6,378 for the week ending March 1, down from 6,650 the previous week. This local trend mirrors the national picture, where U.S. claims decreased by 21,000 to reach 221,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. While New Hampshire saw claims jump by 124%, Rhode Island experienced the largest percentage drop. The data comes from the U.S. Department of Labor's weekly unemployment insurance claims report.

πŸ›οΈ America's love-hate relationship with government spans a century of change. From Theodore Roosevelt's progressive food safety laws to FDR's New Deal programs during the Great Depression, government intervention has historically improved American lives. Programs like Social Security, Medicare, and infrastructure projects created jobs and economic stability when millions were suffering. Yet since the Reagan era, Republican leaders have increasingly portrayed government as problematic rather than beneficial. The article argues that current efforts to dramatically reduce government will harm both citizens who rely on services and businesses that depend on government workers' spending power.
