Ross County • February 24, 2025
Good morning, Ross County. The mats are sizzling with local pride as our wrestling dynamos just turned the sectional championships into a highlight reel of Ross County dominance. From Chillicothe's powerhouse performances to Huntington's impressive showing, our athletes proved they've got more moves than a chess grandmaster, with over 25 local wrestlers punching their tickets to districts.
While our grapplers are making headlines on the mats, there's plenty more to celebrate across the county. Local hoops teams are bringing March Madness energy early with dramatic tournament victories, and drivers are finding a pleasant surprise at the pump with gas prices dipping to $3.00. Talk about a triple threat of good news - though we're pretty sure our wrestlers could handle a few more rounds.

π€Ό Local wrestlers dominate sectionals with multiple champions crowned in Ohio. Chillicothe and Huntington each celebrated sectional victories, with Chillicothe's Cannan Smith and Zach Janes securing impressive wins in their weight classes. Waverly's Alex "Pee Wee" Tolliver claimed the 215-pound title, while Huntington's Alex Breniser led his team to a strong third-place finish. Westfall impressed by qualifying nine wrestlers for districts, including four runners-up, as more than 25 local athletes advanced to next week's competition.
π High school basketball heats up with five local teams advancing. This week's tournament schedule features four boys' teams and one girls' squad competing across multiple venues. Unioto stands as the lone girls' team remaining, set to face Avon Lake at Zanesville High School. The boys' matchups include compelling contests between Zane Trace vs Ironton, Jackson vs Waverly, and Unioto vs Fairfield Union. Huntington rounds out the schedule with a showdown against Peebles at Jackson High School.
β½οΈ Ohio drivers catch a break as gas prices drop to $3.00. The five-cent decline from last week puts Ohio's prices nearly 5% below the national average of $3.15 per gallon. Current prices show a significant swing from the year's low of $2.61 in January to a peak of $3.65 in April. While prices are down 8 cents from last month, they remain 8% higher than the $2.77 per gallon Ohioans paid this time last year.
π Ohio jobless claims drop as national numbers tick upward. New unemployment filings in the state fell to 5,994 last week, down from 6,469 the previous week, according to Labor Department data. The national picture tells a different story, with U.S. claims rising by 5,000 to reach 219,000. Kentucky experienced the most dramatic shift among states, with claims surging by 145.5%. Meanwhile, the Virgin Islands led in the opposite direction, recording a remarkable 45.9% decrease in new claims.
π Two local teams triumph in dramatic district basketball tournament battles. Zane Trace dominated Nelsonville-York with a crushing 76-46 victory, led by standout performances from Grady Stewart and Landon Robinson. Huntington pulled off a thrilling upset against third-seeded Symmes Valley, securing a 63-60 win with Frankie Hirsch's clutch layup in the final seconds. While these teams advance, four other local squads - Southeastern, Adena, Chillicothe, and Paint Valley - saw their seasons come to an end. Both winning teams now look ahead to their next challenges, with Zane Trace facing Ironton and Huntington set to battle Peebles.
The Unioto Shermans (22-4) marched past Tri-Valley 66-56 in a Saturday showdown, proving that these Shermans know how to win on the road. Next up they'll face the red-hot Avon Lake Shoremen (20-5), who've been making waves of their own after drowning Westlake 54-30.
