Ross County • January 14, 2025
Good morning, Ross County. Thirty years ago this week, Ross County residents were huddled around their VCRs with rental tapes as temperatures plunged to a bone-chilling -29°F at Hopewell Culture Historical Park. That historic 1994 deep freeze feels particularly relevant as we brace for another arctic blast, though thankfully this week's forecast of near-zero temperatures seems almost balmy in comparison.
While we're battening down the hatches against winter's latest assault, there's plenty of warmth to be found in our community news. Adena Health is celebrating elite employer status, the NAACP is preparing for its annual MLK Jubilee Day celebration, and new housing opportunities are on the horizon with 500 Section 8 vouchers becoming available. Sometimes the coldest weeks bring out our community's warmest moments.

❄️ Ohio town hit bone-chilling -29°F in historic 1994 deep freeze. The record-setting temperature at Hopewell Culture Historical Park near Chillicothe shattered the town's previous low of -21°F. Nine inches of snow blanketed the area, forcing retailers and industries to close their doors. Local video stores were packed with residents stocking up on VHS tapes for indoor entertainment, while die-hard regulars still crowded into Crispie Cream Donut Shop for coffee and conversation despite the brutal conditions.
🏥 Ohio healthcare provider Adena earns elite employer status for 2024. The recognition from Gallagher's U.S. Benefits Strategy & Benchmarking Survey highlights Adena Health's excellence in managing people and HR programs. The healthcare organization stood out for its strategic investment in employee benefits, competitive compensation, and career development opportunities. Adena earned the distinction by excelling in key areas including benefits planning, wellness strategy, and workforce engagement. Their approach has proven that prioritizing employee well-being directly contributes to organizational success and better community healthcare.
🕊️ Ross County NAACP plans MLK celebration at historic First Baptist Church. The organization will host its annual Jubilee Day event on January 19, commemorating Dr. King's birthday and the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Rev. Moses Edwards Jr., the church's pastor, will deliver remarks at the 3 p.m. celebration. The event, taking place at 65 W. Fourth St. in Chillicothe, welcomes all community members to attend.
🏠 Chillicothe housing vouchers up for grabs, but only 500 spots available. The Chillicothe Metropolitan Housing Authority will begin accepting Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher applications on February 3rd at 8 a.m. Applicants must provide proof of monthly income, identification, and an email address to be considered. Applications can be submitted through the authority's website at www.chillimha.com. The waiting list will close once 500 applications have been received, with only one application permitted per person.
❄️ Ross County braces for bone-chilling week with temperatures near zero. The Ohio region will experience below-freezing conditions through Friday, with Tuesday night expected to hit a frigid low around 0 degrees. Daytime highs will struggle to reach above 30 degrees for most of the week, though Thursday offers slight relief with a high of 33. Some respite arrives Friday as temperatures climb to a relatively mild 40 degrees. Mostly cloudy and partly sunny conditions will alternate throughout the week.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
