Good morning, Preble County. The old saying "it takes a village" came to life recently as forty-four fire departments converged on Eaton fairgrounds for a remarkable rural water emergency training. This collaborative effort—drawing 75 participants and 20 fire apparatus from departments up to an hour away—demonstrated how communities working together can maintain critical water flow even when municipal systems reach their limits. Chief Andy Bekemeier's emphasis on pre-planning water access points highlights the foresight that keeps our communities safe during emergencies.

Meanwhile, Middletown finds itself navigating both challenges and triumphs. While the school district faces a significant setback with $5.6 million in federal funding being recalled mid-construction of their transportation center, the community recently demonstrated its unifying spirit during a spectacular Memorial Day celebration. The parade, featuring nearly 60 units along a two-mile route, provided a welcome respite from local disagreements as thousands gathered to honor fallen heroes—a powerful reminder of what brings us together when it matters most.

🚌 Middletown schools lose millions in federal funding mid-construction project. The U.S. Department of Education is recalling $5.6 million previously awarded to JD Vance's hometown school district for a new transportation center. Construction is already halfway complete, with the district having received just $1.2 million of the promised $6.76 million. Local Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Warren Davidson who wants to eliminate the Education Department, have asked the Trump administration to release the funds. The district has reached out to Vice President Vance, a Middletown High School graduate, for assistance.

🚒 Forty-four fire departments train for rural water emergencies in Eaton. The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association hosted a large-scale tanker task force exercise at the Eaton fairgrounds, focusing on maintaining 1,000 gallons per minute flow for over an hour using only tankers. The training, which attracted 75 participants and 20 fire apparatus from departments up to an hour away, emphasized the importance of identifying secondary water sources when municipal systems reach their limits. Fire Chief Andy Bekemeier highlighted the value of pre-planning water access points for major incidents, noting "This was staying ahead of having the knowledge before we have an incident." The successful exercise prompted discussions about making such collaborative training an annual event.
