🏟️ Green space blues

Preble County • March 7, 2025

Good morning, Preble County. Green space is vanishing at Miami University, where the Board of Trustees unanimously approved placing a new sports arena on beloved Cook Field despite student outcry. The decision has sparked heated debate about campus aesthetics, recreational access, and whether sacrificing central green space will actually boost game attendance. It's a striking example of how even institutions known for beautiful landscapes must navigate competing priorities.

In other developments, more than 280 Miami faculty have signed a letter opposing Ohio's anti-DEI legislation, while nationally, the Veterans Affairs department announced plans to trim its workforce by a staggering 80,000 positions. Secretary Doug Collins insists the 15% reduction won't impact veteran services, focusing instead on eliminating bureaucracy. Only time will tell if this dramatic workforce diet delivers the promised improvements or creates new challenges for those who've served.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🏟️ Miami students outraged as arena approved for beloved Cook Field. The university's Board of Trustees unanimously voted to place a new sports arena on Cook Field, despite limited public support for this location. Students expressed disappointment about losing a central green space that's regularly used for intramural sports, casual recreation, and campus connectivity. Many worry that relocating recreational activities to more distant locations will decrease participation, while others question whether a new arena will actually increase game attendance. Critics argue the decision contradicts Miami University's reputation for beautiful green spaces and campus aesthetics.

📝 Miami faculty rally against anti-DEI legislation in Ohio. Over 280 Miami University faculty and staff signed a letter opposing Ohio's Senate Bill 1 and federal directives that threaten diversity initiatives on campus. The legislation could ban diversity programming and scholarships for underrepresented students, potentially affecting events like Horizon and Lavender Graduation celebrations. Supporters argue these DEI efforts are essential for creating inclusive learning environments, not the "divisive, discriminatory activities" critics claim. The letter urges community members to take action before the companion bill, H.B. 6, comes up for a vote in the State House.

🪖 Veterans Affairs plans to cut 80,000 jobs nationwide. Secretary Doug Collins announced a department-wide review aimed at reducing VA employment from 470,000 to 398,000 employees, representing a 15% decrease. In a video posted on X, Collins emphasized the need to eliminate waste and bureaucracy while improving services to veterans. Despite the significant workforce reduction, he assured that cuts would not affect veterans' health care services or benefits. The memo obtained by the Associated Press indicates an agency-wide reorganization scheduled for August to "resize and tailor the workforce."
