Good morning, Powell. Back in 1992, a diplomatic triumph brought a slice of China to Central Ohio when the Columbus Zoo welcomed giant pandas Xing Xing and Qin Qin after years of international negotiations. The groundbreaking exhibit, championed by Jack Hanna, drew nearly a million visitors during its four-month run—transforming the Midwest zoo into a global conservation player and creating memories that still resonate with Ohioans three decades later.

While we're reminiscing about warmer days, Mother Nature seems to have other plans for the unofficial start of summer. Central Ohio residents will need to keep those sweaters handy as temperatures hover 10-20 degrees below normal through May's end. The good news? Relief is on the horizon with June expected to finally deliver those seasonal temperatures we've been craving. Meanwhile, academic excellence flourishes across the region with impressive achievements from local students at universities throughout Ohio and beyond.

🐼 Columbus Zoo's 1992 panda exhibit required years of diplomatic maneuvering. After securing Chinese government approval with help from then-Vice President Bush, the zoo overcame a federal moratorium and legal challenges from wildlife organizations to host pandas Xing Xing and Qin Qin. The four-month exhibit opened on June 5, 1992, attracting 4,000 visitors on its first day and nearly a million overall. Though the zoo temporarily lost its accreditation and donated $300,000 to panda conservation, Jack Hanna and zoo officials considered the exhibit an extraordinary success for bringing these rare animals to America's heartland.

❄️ Summer's unofficial start brings unseasonably chilly weather to Ohio. Central Ohio residents hoping for warm weather will need to wait a bit longer, with temperatures expected to stay 10-20 degrees below normal through May's end. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts high temperatures primarily in the 60s, well below the normal mid-to-upper 70s typical for late May. Relief is on the horizon, however, as early June should finally bring a pattern shift with temperatures returning to normal and potentially climbing into the 80s. The outlook for June gives slight chances for above-normal temperatures across the region.
