Good morning, Powell. A hometown success story is brewing in Delaware as Staas Brewing Co., founded by Shawnee High School graduate Donald Staas, has advanced to the finals of the Central Ohio Brewery Bracket. The local establishment, specializing in Belgian and English beers with 12 varieties on tap, now stands just one vote away from being crowned the region's top brewery as it faces off against Columbus Brewing Co. in the Columbus Dispatch's contest.

In bittersweet news from the Columbus Zoo, the community is remembering Mara, the beloved 18-year-old Amur tiger who left behind an impressive conservation legacy. Meanwhile, Delaware residents are facing the reality of higher electricity costs as the City Council approved a new agreement capping rates at 10.4Β’ per kWhβ€”a significant increase driven by capacity costs that have jumped nearly nine times in the latest auction. Despite the hike, the program has still saved residents hundreds through December.

🐯 Beloved tiger Mara dies at Columbus Zoo after 15 years. The 18-year-old Amur tiger was humanely euthanized due to age-related mobility issues after living at the zoo since 2010. Known for her "spunk" and "heart full of mischief," Mara made history in 2012 by giving birth to the first litter of tiger cubs at the Columbus Zoo in over 25 years. She eventually raised three litters, leaving behind nine cubs and a lasting legacy for Amur tiger conservation. The zoo has invited the public to celebrate the life of their longest-living tiger in recent years.

πŸ’‘ Delaware locks in higher electricity rates for city residents. The City Council approved a new 12-month agreement with Dynegy Energy Services, capping rates at 10.4Β’ per kWh for its electric aggregation program. This represents a significant increase from current rates, driven by skyrocketing capacity costs that jumped nearly nine times in the latest auction. Despite the increase, Energy Alliances reports the program has saved AEP customers an average of $416.58 and Ohio Edison customers $491.99 through December 2024. Customers can still leave the program anytime without termination fees or join at the same rates as existing participants.
