🎖️ After 80 years, a WWII hero finally returns home. Platoon Sergeant Harold M. Weaver of Cuyahoga Falls, who was killed during a Japanese counterattack on Okinawa in 1945, has been identified through advanced forensic testing. The Marine Corps veteran served in pivotal Pacific battles including Guadalcanal, Peleliu, and Okinawa before making the ultimate sacrifice. His remains, once declared permanently nonrecoverable in 1950, were returned by the Japanese government in 2016 and identified in 2023. A public ceremony will welcome him home on October 11 at Oakwood Cemetery, where he'll be laid to rest beside his parents.
👵 Grandparents get special spotlight at Gurney Elementary's heartwarming new event. The inaugural "Gurney Loves Grandparents" celebration created meaningful connections as students shared poems, engaged in classroom discussion strategies, and enjoyed quality time with their special guests. Principal Patrick Carpenter emphasized the importance of these relationships in creating a sense of belonging within the school community. Meanwhile, sixth-graders are developing crucial digital citizenship skills through lessons about artificial intelligence and online safety, learning to navigate technology responsibly. These comprehensive initiatives reflect the school's commitment to both nurturing personal relationships and preparing students for an increasingly digital world.
