Good morning, Portage County. After eight decades of uncertainty, a hometown hero finally completes his journey home. Platoon Sergeant Harold M. Weaver, who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, will receive the honor he deserves at Oakwood Cemetery on October 11. His remarkable story—from serving in pivotal Pacific battles to the advanced forensic testing that finally identified his remains—reminds us of the enduring commitment to bring every service member home.

Meanwhile, connections both old and new are being celebrated across our community. Gurney Elementary launched its heartwarming "Gurney Loves Grandparents" event, creating meaningful moments between generations, while Cleveland Heights takes a bold step forward by approving its largest infill housing initiative since the 2008 crisis. These vacant lots, representing one-third of the city's inventory, will soon transform from empty spaces to new beginnings for families throughout the region.

🎖️ After 80 years, a WWII hero finally returns home. Platoon Sergeant Harold M. Weaver of Cuyahoga Falls, who was killed during a Japanese counterattack on Okinawa in 1945, has been identified through advanced forensic testing. The Marine Corps veteran served in pivotal Pacific battles including Guadalcanal, Peleliu, and Okinawa before making the ultimate sacrifice. His remains, once declared permanently nonrecoverable in 1950, were returned by the Japanese government in 2016 and identified in 2023. A public ceremony will welcome him home on October 11 at Oakwood Cemetery, where he'll be laid to rest beside his parents.
