Good morning, Portage County. When it comes to turning personal tragedy into creative triumph, Cleveland Heights filmmaker Jessy Leigh shows us how it's done. After losing her father in 2017, she channeled her grief into award-winning storytelling, with her latest project "A Pirate's Life For Me" exploring loss through the touching friendship between a marine biology major and a young girl in pirate costume. The film continues her impressive track record, with three previous works featured in the Cleveland International Film Festival.
Meanwhile, community spirit flows as freely as the Cuyahoga River during Mantua Rotary's annual Poker Paddle fundraiser, where kayakers collected cards for a chance at cash prizes while supporting local initiatives. And in a victory for everyday justice, a citizen's dashboard camera footage helped Pepper Pike police solve a hit-and-run case on I-271, demonstrating how technology in the right hands can make our roads safer for everyone.

🎬 Filmmaker turns grief into award-winning stories after father's death. Cleveland Heights resident Jessy Leigh discovered her passion for filmmaking after struggling to find her academic path at Ohio State University. Her current project, "A Pirate's Life For Me," explores grief through the story of a marine biology major who befriends a young girl in pirate costume. The film draws from Leigh's personal experience losing her father in 2017 and continues her successful track record, with three previous works featured in the Cleveland International Film Festival. Leigh hopes to screen her latest project at the festival's 50th anniversary next spring.
🚗 Dash cam video helps solve hit-and-run mystery in Pepper Pike. A citizen's dashboard camera footage captured the moment when a black SUV struck a red car on I-271 northbound near Cedar/Brainard exit in Ohio. The impact pushed the red car into a gray minivan, with the SUV driver fleeing the scene while the other two vehicles stopped. Thanks to the witness's video evidence, Pepper Pike police were able to track down the hit-skip driver and resolve the case. Police are now encouraging all drivers to install dash cameras in their vehicles for similar situations.
