Good morning, Portage County. June is shaping up to be a month of meaningful firsts and exciting expansions across Northeast Ohio. Stow will host its inaugural LGBTQ+ Pride Cookout on June 21, creating an intergenerational space for community connection complete with entertainment, games, and inclusive food options. The free event represents a significant milestone for organizer Aaron Yeager, who once couldn't imagine living openly in his hometown but now helps lead efforts to broaden perspectives in the suburb.
Food lovers have reason to celebrate as Chef Anthony Zappola brings his acclaimed Tony's Burger Shop to downtown Willoughby this month. The chef-driven smash burger concept that found success in Shaker Heights will now share its mouthwatering menu at the Erie + Vine bar. Meanwhile, Chagrin Falls High School continues its tradition of excellence, earning the Best Communities for Music Education Award for the fourth consecutive year while students raised over $1,500 for global education initiatives.

🌈 Stow suburb hosts its first-ever LGBTQ+ Pride Cookout this June. Aaron Yeager, who once couldn't imagine living openly gay in his hometown, is now helping organize this free community celebration as secretary of Stow Collaboration for Change. The nonprofit, founded in 2020 following criticism of the local school board's response to Black Lives Matter, aims to broaden perspectives in the predominantly white, conservative suburb. The June 21 event will feature entertainment, games, inclusive food options, and a donation drive benefiting Akron's Bayard Rustin LGBTQ+ Resource Center. "I want this to be a space where elders and youth can come together and learn from each other's experiences," says Yeager.
🍔 Tony's Burger Shop expands to downtown Willoughby this June. Chef Anthony Zappola is bringing his popular smash burger concept to the Erie + Vine bar, replacing the shuttered Dukes 'n' Boots on Erie Street. The new location will feature the same chef-driven menu of single and double smash burgers, specialty burgers, and fried chicken offerings that made the original Shaker Heights spot successful. Zappola, who previously worked with the building owners, describes the arrangement as mutually beneficial with him operating the food side while partners manage the bar. The chef hinted at further expansion plans for the Tony's concept in the near future.
