Good morning, Portage County. History comes alive this spring as the Shalersville Historical Society prepares for its return to evening meetings and the upcoming dedication of School #3. Their July 13 celebration, complete with a community picnic, offers a perfect opportunity to connect with local heritage—while this Sunday's open house invites residents to share their own family stories with the museum's curator, creating a living bridge between past and present.
Meanwhile, swift action by local firefighters contained a Tuesday night blaze at Nestle's Solon factory, limiting damage to $40,000 with no injuries reported. The fire, which originated in a vacuum pump, showcased impressive coordination between multiple departments—even utilizing police drones for aerial visualization. Closer to home, Cuyahoga Falls residents will notice changes on Berk Street as the city implements parking restrictions to improve safety, while also investing in water infrastructure improvements at both the treatment plant and Brookledge Golf Club.

🔥 Fire erupts at Nestle's Solon factory, swiftly extinguished by local heroes. The Tuesday night blaze at 5750 Harper Road caused an estimated $40,000 in damage but resulted in no injuries. Solon Fire Rescue responded at 9:01 pm, finding the building being evacuated as they located the fire in a rooftop machinery room. Fire Chief Mark Vedder reported the blaze originated in a vacuum pump used in production and was contained to the machine room and roof. Multiple fire departments assisted in the operation, which was brought under control in about thirty minutes with help from police drones providing aerial visualization.
🚗 Cuyahoga Falls bans parking on one side of Berk Street. City Council approved the measure to improve safety after residents struggled to access driveways due to the street's curve and parked vehicles. The Council also greenlit two water-related contracts: $78,959 for automated manganese meters at the water treatment plant and $125,000 for well maintenance at Brookledge Golf Club. The new meters will replace labor-intensive manual testing, while the golf course project represents the first phase of irrigation system upgrades in 17 years. Two additional ordinances were introduced for discussion at the next Council meeting on May 5.
