🚧 Detour dilemma

Portage County • April 22, 2025

Good morning, Portage County. The traffic landscape shifts dramatically next week as Akron's Central Interchange undergoes its $161-million transformation. Monday brings significant closures affecting I-77, Route 8, and I-76 connections, with eastbound I-76 squeezed to a single lane from the interchange to Tallmadge. For commuters heading toward the Portage County line, the additional paving project means planning alternate routes might be your best Monday morning strategy.

Beyond roadways, our community stories reflect both endings and beginnings. Sydney Kershaw's remarkable 89-year journey—from Cleveland State engineering student to Parker Hannifin VP responsible for building the company's headquarters—comes to a close, while Geauga parks launch a fresh initiative to remove tobacco waste from natural spaces. The environmental partnership, building on last October's successful cleanup effort, now invites more volunteers to join this worthwhile conservation project.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🕊️ Sydney Kershaw, engineering VP and devoted family man, dies at 89. The Russell Township resident passed away on April 16, 2025, leaving behind his wife Nancy of 68 years and a large, loving family. After graduating from Cleveland State with an engineering degree, Kershaw built a successful career at Parker Hannifin, where his final project was constructing the company's corporate headquarters. An enthusiast of fishing, golfing, and boating, he divided his time between Cleveland and Florida while treasuring travels with his wife and moments with his children and grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be held on May 3 at Federated Church in Chagrin Falls.

🚧 Akron's Central Interchange gets major makeover starting Monday. The $161-million project enters a new phase with two significant ramp closures: I-77 North to I-76 East and Southbound Route 8 to I-76 East. Eastbound I-76 will be reduced to just one lane from the interchange to the Tallmadge exits. A secondary paving project extending to the Portage County line is contributing to the traffic changes. Over a dozen ramp and lane closures took effect early Monday morning, with detours in place for affected routes.

🌿 Geauga parks need your help to clean up tobacco waste. Geauga Park District is teaming up with Lake-Geauga Recovery Centers and University Hospitals for a park clean-up initiative focused on removing littered tobacco products. The partnership previously organized a successful event on October 20, 2024, when 22 volunteers participated in a two-hour collection effort. Organizers are now seeking additional community members to join this environmental conservation project to keep local parks clean and healthy.
