Good morning, Portage County. The battle over Ohio's EdChoice voucher program has reached a critical turning point, with Akron Public Schools joining a lawsuit that questions the constitutionality of diverting $29 million in public funds to voucher students. While the legal drama unfolds, one resourceful Akron homeowner has found her own financial solution by transforming her century-old Arts and Crafts house into a thriving AirBnB, complete with restored plaster walls and historically accurate "Venetian Glass" green paint.

April brings National Donate Life Month, a reminder of how tragedy can transform into hope through organ donation. Lifebanc CEO Katie Payne's personal connection to this cause—her brother Billy's donation after a fatal accident—highlights the profound impact a single donor can have, potentially saving eight lives and improving 75 others. Despite widespread eligibility regardless of age or many health conditions, misconceptions persist while 17 Americans die daily waiting for life-saving transplants.

🏫 Ohio's voucher program is starving Akron public schools. Akron Public Schools has joined a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the state's EdChoice voucher program, which diverts about $29 million to fund 3,777 voucher students. Board member Barbara Sykes argues the universal voucher system allows families earning up to $140,000 to receive full scholarships, with no income cap for partial vouchers. Unlike public schools that must accept all students, voucher schools can establish selective admission requirements while receiving public funding. Had Ohio's Fair School Funding Plan been fully implemented, Akron schools would have received an additional $12 million this year.

🏠 Akron homeowner transforms century-old house into an AirBnB gem. Holly Christensen shares her journey of converting her 1909 Arts and Crafts home into a short-term rental property. After raising her children there and later renting it out long-term, she decided an AirBnB would be more profitable and less damaging than traditional tenants. The renovation process included restoring original plaster walls, upgrading electrical systems, and choosing historically appropriate colors like "Venetian Glass" green. Christensen's project showcases how Akron's relatively low cost of living allows for creative property investments with promising returns.
