🛫 Skyward salaries

Portage County • April 8, 2025

Good morning, Portage County. The staggering $160,000+ salary potential for air traffic controllers highlights an unlikely career paradox: despite the lucrative compensation, America faces a critical shortage of 3,200 controllers. Kent State University serves as a key training pipeline for these high-stakes positions, though the path from classroom to control tower can stretch years despite the FAA's recent efforts to streamline the process and boost starting pay after receiving 10,000 applications in their latest push.

On the roads, Northeast Ohio's construction season has kicked into high gear with a perfect storm of closures creating navigation nightmares. The I-77 interchange at Wallings Road will remain closed until spring 2026, while I-90's eastbound exit to East 55th Street shuts down until June. Closer to home, a Streetsboro man received a 5-7.5 year prison sentence for fentanyl trafficking after providing drugs that caused an overdose and selling hundreds of pills to undercover investigators.

💊 Streetsboro man gets prison for fentanyl trafficking after overdose incident. Robert Schindler Jr., 22, received a 5-7.5 year sentence for providing fentanyl that caused a woman's non-fatal overdose and for selling approximately 300 fentanyl pills to undercover investigators. Despite his attorney arguing for treatment instead of incarceration due to Schindler's own addiction struggles, the judge ordered prison time because of the mandatory sentencing requirements for trafficking charges. Schindler apologized in court, expressing regret for not seeking help sooner. He was also ordered to pay $1,650 restitution to the Sheriff's Office.

✈️ America faces a critical air traffic controller shortage of 3,200 workers. Kent State University serves as a key feeder school for the FAA's central training program in Oklahoma, but the hiring process can take years despite the lucrative $160,000+ salary potential. The FAA recently announced plans to streamline applications and increase starting salaries after receiving over 10,000 applicants in their latest hiring push. Industry experts also criticize the outdated technology still being used, including handwritten paper strips to track aircraft. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warns that without modernization, the system's growing "cracks" could have serious consequences as airspace becomes increasingly congested.

Meanwhile, I-90's eastbound exit to East 55th Street in Cleveland closes until early June.
