📚 Book bloodline

Portage County • March 28, 2025

Good morning, Portage County. A shared love of books and community runs as deep as family heritage for Kalyn Kappelman, who's preparing to take the reins at the Chagrin Falls library branch on March 31. With a grandfather who worked at the Library of Congress and a philosophy master's degree in her pocket, Kappelman's career path seems written in the stars as she steps into leadership at one of the county's busiest branches.

In healthcare developments that are literally saving lives, University Hospitals Portage Medical Center's new catheterization lab has dramatically reduced heart-related deaths since opening in April. The $2.5 million investment has slashed mortality rates across all age groups, addressing a critical need in our rural community. Meanwhile, local authorities are investigating a troubling roadside incident where a simple horn honk allegedly escalated to a driver brandishing a firearm near SOM Center and Aurora roads.

After earning a master's in philosophy, Kappelman naturally gravitated toward library work, building expertise in technology education before obtaining her library science degree. She looks forward to leading one of the county's most active branches, focusing on community engagement and supporting her staff in the "gorgeous branch in a beautiful area."
