🚨 Fast and furious

Portage County • March 13, 2025

Good morning, Portage County. Two construction titans are redrawing Northeast Ohio's industrial landscape as Baker Construction acquires Cleveland Cement Contractors' equipment assets and key personnel. The strategic move bolsters Baker's position in Northern Ohio markets while honoring the 81-year legacy of a company that helped build our region. As one construction story concludes, another chapter of community vigilance unfolds with bank employees becoming unexpected heroes by thwarting a potential $14,000 scam targeting an elderly woman.

Meanwhile, a routine traffic stop escalated into a dramatic scene straight from an action movie when a driver allegedly hit speeds exceeding 100 mph on I-480 before crashing. The incident, which resulted in felony charges despite the suspect having no prior warrants, has prompted Bedford Heights Police to review pursuit protocolsβ€”a reminder that split-second decisions often have far-reaching consequences for both law enforcement and those they encounter.

πŸ—οΈ Two Ohio construction giants join forces in strategic acquisition. Baker Construction has purchased the equipment assets of Cleveland Cement Contractors, absorbing key leadership and workforce members from the 81-year-old Brooklyn Heights-based company. Cleveland Cement will complete current projects but cease bidding on new work, while Baker strengthens its position in Northern Ohio and Virginia markets. The deal complements Baker's national presence in constructing large-scale facilities like warehouses and distribution centers. Baker's CEO highlighted the acquisition as part of their strategy to expand capabilities and deliver greater value, noting shared company values of excellence, hard work, service, and integrity.
