Good morning, Portage County. Just as the first crocuses peek through the March soil, Garrettsville Library is sprouting two timely programs to help our community grow and thrive. From sustainable rain gardens that capture nature's bounty to essential resources for our seniors, these upcoming workshops prove that learning, like springtime, knows no season.
Speaking of unexpected growth, the local news garden has sprouted some peculiar blooms: a creative driver on I-77 tried channeling her inner teenager by borrowing her daughter's identity (spoiler: it didn't work), while Greater Akron's Lenten fish fry scene is scaling up with more than 25 venues serving everything from classic cod to pierogi perfection. Who says winter's final weeks have to be dull?

🌱 Garrettsville Library springs into action with two community education programs. The library kicks off the gardening season with a special rain garden workshop led by OSU Extension expert Jill Halligan on March 10th. Limited to 30 participants, the session will provide essential knowledge for building and maintaining sustainable rain gardens. Additionally, UH Portage Medical Center volunteers will host a March 14th seminar focused on financial, mental health, and security resources for local seniors. Both events require advance registration and are specifically designed for adult participants.
🚔 Mom tries to dodge arrest by impersonating her own daughter. During a routine traffic stop on I-77 near Brecksville, Ohio, police pulled over a silver Chevrolet Malibu for traveling 79 mph in a 60 mph zone. The driver, who had an outstanding warrant, attempted to evade arrest by providing officers with her daughter's identification. This incident, occurring on January 26, led to additional charges beyond the initial speeding violation.
🐟 Akron's Lenten fish fry season is swimming with delicious options. Over 25 churches, clubs, and restaurants across Greater Akron are serving up weekly fish dinners throughout the 2025 Lenten season, starting March 5. Most venues offer both fried and baked fish options, alongside alternatives like shrimp, pierogi, and kid-friendly meals. Dinner prices typically range from $12-18 and include sides like fries, coleslaw, and mac and cheese. Many locations provide convenient carry-out options, making it easy for families to maintain the traditional Friday fish fry custom.
In a defensive slugfest that had fans checking their scorecards twice, Streetsboro squeaked past Woodridge 2-0 in what might be the lowest-scoring high school basketball game since James Naismith first hung up his peach baskets. Meanwhile, Lutheran East showed no such scoring restraint, soaring past Southeast 92-45 in a game that had the scoreboard operator working overtime.
