❄️ Winter weather swap

Portage County • December 20, 2024

Good morning, Portage County. Baby, it's cold outside... but maybe not for long! While Greater Akron is bracing for a snowy weekend with temperatures dipping into the teens, it looks like Mother Nature is playing a holiday switcheroo – trading those potential white Christmas vibes for rain showers and 40-degree temps on the big day. Talk about coal in our stockings! Speaking of getting around in challenging weather, there's finally some good news for folks being released from the Portage County Jail. A new free shuttle service is helping former inmates reach public transit hubs instead of facing long walks from the remote facility – a welcome change that's bringing together everyone from local judges to healthcare providers. And while we're on the topic of transportation woes, South Euclid business owners are dealing with a different kind of vehicle problem: a crafty crew of catalytic converter thieves who helped themselves to five pieces of precious car parts in one weekend. (Pro tip: maybe don't leave your reciprocating saw on camera next time, folks.)

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🚗 New shuttle service rescues released inmates from remote county jail. The Portage County Sheriff's Office has partnered with Emerald Transportation to provide free rides for former inmates from the Shalersville facility to public transit hubs. The twice-daily weekday service, starting Monday, addresses concerns about inmates being stranded or walking long distances after release, as the jail isn't on any bus route. The initiative brings together multiple community stakeholders, including local judges, University Hospitals, and Family & Community Services. This solution particularly tackles Ravenna officials' past frustrations about inmates being released downtown after social service agencies had closed for the day.

❄️ Akron's Christmas forecast: Snow this weekend, rain on the big day. The National Weather Service predicts a wintry mix heading into the holiday weekend, with temperatures dropping into the 20s and teens on Saturday and Sunday. Greater Akron could see about an inch of snow accumulation Friday and Saturday, with higher amounts expected in Lake Erie snowbelt regions. However, the dream of a white Christmas will likely melt away as temperatures climb to the upper 30s on Christmas Eve. By Christmas Day, residents can expect rain showers and temperatures reaching into the lower 40s.

🔧 Thieves strike South Euclid businesses, making off with five catalytic converters. The brazen thefts occurred over a single weekend, targeting both an auto repair shop and a lawn care business in the Ohio city. Surveillance footage from a neighboring business caught one suspect arriving equipped with a battery-powered reciprocating saw. Two customer vehicles at the auto shop and three company trucks at the lawn care business were hit during the crime spree. Local detectives have launched an investigation into both incidents, which happened on Greenvale Drive and Ruple Road respectively.
