Good morning, Pike County. A century after 120,000 soldiers trained for the Great War, Camp Sherman's legacy lives on through a new historical marker at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Area. What once echoed with military drills now offers peaceful hunting grounds and hiking trails, with bald eagles nesting where Army barracks once stood—a powerful transformation from wartime preparation to natural preservation.

From honoring the past to celebrating the present, the SamJam Bluegrass Festival marks its impressive 10-year milestone this August, drawing music lovers from 25 states to our fairgrounds. The five-day event featuring Grammy winners and $1 beers has evolved into a $4 million economic boost for our community. Amid these celebrations, we're also reminded of life's fragility with the tragic loss of motorcyclist Bryan Dyke in a recent Jackson County collision—a sobering reminder of road safety's importance in our rural communities.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🪖 Ohio honors Camp Sherman's WWI legacy with new historical marker. The ODNR placed the marker at Pleasant Valley Wildlife Area, formerly part of a massive Army training center that prepared 120,000 soldiers for World War I. Established in 1917 near Chillicothe, Camp Sherman featured over 1,000 buildings before being dismantled in 1921. The 1,469-acre wildlife area now offers hunting and hiking opportunities where troops once trained a century ago. This protected land represents a global trend of former military sites becoming important conservation areas, now home to deer, rabbits, and five nearby bald eagle nests.
