🌧️ Muddy royalty

Good morning, Pike County. Mother Nature hasn't been kind to the Ross County Fair this year, with relentless rain transforming the grounds into what treasurer Kenneth Ruddell called a "cruel" muddy mess. Attendance numbers have taken a hit, plummeting by 1,400 on Thursday alone compared to last year, despite heroic efforts including five truckloads of gravel to combat the soggy conditions. Even the traditional harness racing couldn't escape the weather's wrath, falling victim to an unusable track.

In more regal news, the fair did manage to crown its royalty despite the downpours, with Camron Naumovski and Lorelei Bluck taking their places as the 2025 Ross County Fair King and Queen. Meanwhile, Scioto County welcomes new leadership as Merit Smith steps in as county commissioner following the tragic loss of Cathy Coleman. The three-time retiree brings a wealth of experience from his careers in business, juvenile court, and education to this new chapter of public service.

🌧️ Relentless rain turned the 1966 Ross County Fair into a muddy mess. Fair treasurer Kenneth Ruddell called the weather "cruel," declaring it the worst in his experience with the event. Attendance plummeted, with Thursday's numbers down 1,400 from the previous year. The highway department had to dump five truckloads of gravel to combat the muddy conditions, and harness racing was canceled due to the soggy track. Though Friday saw a slight rebound with no rain in the forecast, the fair's total attendance still finished 3,491 below the previous year's figures.

🏛️ Merit Smith steps in as county commissioner after tragedy. The South Webster resident was appointed by the Scioto County Republican Central Committee to fill the seat of Commissioner Cathy Coleman, who died July 4 from injuries in a car accident. Smith, who has retired three times from careers in business, juvenile court, and education, emphasizes he's not trying to fill Coleman's shoes but rather maintain integrity in the role. With extensive experience including roles as chief probation officer, maintenance director, pastor, and volunteer firefighter/EMT, Smith aims to focus on economic development and working collaboratively with fellow commissioners. He plans to run for the seat again when the term expires.
