Good morning, Pike County. Mother Nature is making a grand statement just north of us with the unveiling of what might be the world's largest calcareous fen. The new Herron-Downs Nature Preserve in Kinnikinnick represents a rare ecological treasure—where alkaline groundwater creates a specialized wetland environment. While visitors can already explore the Sycamore Trail featuring a Scout-built boardwalk, a $2.4 million restoration project promises to enhance this natural wonder even further over the next 18 months.

In less uplifting news, a social media-inspired crime trend has reached our region as the "Kia Challenge" apparently motivated local teens to steal vehicles for joyrides rather than profit. Meanwhile, the justice system continues its work with Jonathan Penix of Scioto County receiving over 15 years for drug trafficking charges after cutting off his ankle monitor—a reminder of ongoing substance abuse challenges facing our communities.

🌿 Ross County unveils wetland wonder with new nature preserve. The Herron-Downs Fen Nature Preserve celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by a sizable crowd in Kinnikinnick. Park director Myranda Vance highlighted the site's significance as potentially the world's largest calcareous fen—a rare wetland where alkaline groundwater filters through limestone. Though currently unfinished, the 174.7-acre preserve will undergo a $2.4 million EPA-funded restoration project within 18 months. Visitors explored the new Sycamore Trail, which features a boardwalk built by local Boy Scouts as an Eagle Scout project.

🚗 Teen joyriders wreck stolen Kia in Ross County crime spree. The Ross County Sheriff's Department is investigating a surge in vehicle thefts after a 2021 Kia Sportage was stolen and later found crashed in a ditch. Witnesses reported seeing two individuals attempting to free the mud-covered vehicle, which showed signs of being hotwired. Authorities believe this case connects to other recent incidents involving teens aged 14 and 15 who appear to be stealing cars for joyrides rather than profit. The thefts exploit a security vulnerability in certain Kia models that gained notoriety through the "Kia Challenge" social media trend.
