🚪 New beginnings

Pike County • April 4, 2025

Good morning, Pike County. April is bringing significant leadership changes to our community, with Bishop Flaget School welcoming Dr. Derya Rix as their new principal next year. The accomplished educator, who holds advanced degrees in Politics, History, and is completing a Theology master's, will bring her family of six children to meet the school community on April 3rd—marking a new chapter after Laura Corcoran's long tenure at the helm.

Meanwhile, two critical community gatherings are approaching. Piketon's upcoming Town Hall will address the troubling 70-year legacy of the Portsmouth Nuclear Site, where experts will present evidence linking contamination to concerning health outcomes including cancer rates. In Chillicothe, a different kind of healing takes center stage with Operation BRIDGE's two-day recovery outreach event on April 23-24, offering everything from health services to NARCAN distribution at Yoctangee Park's Armory Gym.

☢️ Piketon Town Hall confronts decades of nuclear contamination and illness. The upcoming forum will give voice to residents affected by radioactive exposure from the Portsmouth Nuclear Site, located just 4 miles from the Ohio village. Multiple experts will present evidence, including Dr. Michael Ketterer who found radioactivity in offsite samples and epidemiologist Joseph Mangano who reported Pike County's premature death rate is twice the national average. The 70-year legacy of contamination has been linked to various cancers, cardiovascular issues, and concerning intergenerational health effects including birth defects.
