Pickaway County • October 7, 2025
Good morning, Pickaway County. After 101 remarkable years, Ann B. Walker's pioneering legacy has come to a close. The trailblazing journalist who shattered glass ceilings as the first woman and Black broadcaster to cover Ohio's corridors of power leaves behind an extraordinary blueprint of perseverance – from her 1940s print journalism beginnings through her service in President Carter's administration and her founding role in the National Association of Black Journalists.
Meanwhile, two significant transitions are making headlines: Music legend Barry Manilow has announced his farewell Columbus performance at Nationwide Arena in January 2026, capping an illustrious career that began with commercial jingles and blossomed into Grammy-winning stardom. And in the housing realm, the newly formed Columbus Redevelopment Corporation is tackling the "missing middle" housing gap, with their first 100-unit project set to be revealed next month – a potential game-changer for those caught between market rates and subsidized options.

Starting in print journalism in the 1940s, she later worked in radio and television before joining President Jimmy Carter's administration. A founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Walker championed equal pay and mentored underrepresented talent, including hiring Angela Pace as an intern. 🎵 Barry Manilow says farewell to Columbus with final concert. Known for hits like "Mandy" and "I Write The Songs," Manilow last performed in Columbus in 2023 and recently released a new song, "Once Before I Go," ahead of the tour. The Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner began his career writing commercial jingles, including State Farm's famous slogan, before rising to fame in the late '70s and early '80s.
🏠 New nonprofit tackles Columbus's missing middle housing gap. Columbus Redevelopment Corporation (CRC), founded by Brian and Sarah Higgins, aims to create affordable housing for those caught between market rates and subsidized options. As a Community Housing Development Organization, CRC can build anywhere in Franklin County, working collaboratively with existing housing developers. The female-led organization intentionally recruited board members from "housing-adjacent" fields to provide diverse perspectives on how stable housing affects health and education outcomes. Their first project, a 100-unit apartment development, is expected to be announced in November.
