Good morning, Pickaway County. Home values skyrocketing by over 30% might sound great until the property tax bill arrives. Ohio county auditors are sounding the alarm with a four-point reform plan to tackle what one official ominously compared to "Chernobyl" if left unchecked. Their proposals aim to expand relief for seniors and disabled homeowners while addressing broader tax structure issues—potentially heading off more radical citizen-led initiatives that could eliminate property taxes entirely.

Meanwhile, the wheels of justice are turning more efficiently across Ohio's courts, with pandemic-related case backlogs slashed by more than half since 2022. Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy's efforts are bearing fruit as courts clear their dockets. And in a more symbolic planting, Ohio Christian University launches a new tradition next week with their inaugural "Oaks of Righteousness" ceremony, where each incoming class will be represented by an oak tree, beginning with the Class of 2029.

🏠 Property tax crisis sparks four-point reform plan in Ohio. County auditors are proposing practical solutions to combat soaring property taxes as home values have jumped by 28-37% across Knox, Ashland, and Richland counties. Their recommendations include expanding the homestead exemption for seniors and disabled homeowners, addressing tax-exempt properties, increasing homeowner credits, and limiting the "20-mill floor" that benefits school districts. The County Auditors Association warns that without legislative action, citizens might pursue drastic measures like abolishing property taxes entirely, which one auditor compared to "Chernobyl" for its potentially devastating consequences.

⚖️ Ohio courts slashed pandemic case backlogs by more than half. Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy reported significant progress in clearing delayed cases across the state's court system since 2022. General division courts reduced backlogs by 51%, while juvenile courts saw a 42% reduction and municipal courts improved by 34-44%. Kennedy, who campaigned on addressing this issue, emphasized that "when cases languish, justice delayed becomes justice denied." The Ohio Supreme Court also plans special exhibits and events to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence next year.
