Good morning, Pickaway County. Downtown Columbus is getting a dramatic facelift as Columbus State unveils plans for a $38 million YMCA and park that will transform half a parking lot into a vibrant community space. The ambitious project would add much-needed greenery to the concrete landscape while offering students access to fitness facilities and childcare services for a $65 per semester fee. This catalyst for growth in the Discovery District represents a significant shift from surface parking to meaningful amenities.
Meanwhile, geek culture takes center stage as Matsuricon celebrates its 20th anniversary, drawing 10,000 proud anime enthusiasts to Columbus this weekend. What began with just a few hundred attendees has evolved into a thriving convention featuring everything from cosplay to D&D-playing service dogs. In more solemn news, the Chillicothe VA prepares to honor 9/11 heroes with its third annual memorial 5K run, bringing together veterans and community members to remember lives lost during the 2001 attacks.

🏢 Columbus State plans $38 million YMCA and park for downtown campus. The proposed 50,000-square-foot facility would transform half of a large parking lot, featuring a YMCA with drop-in childcare center along Long Street. Students would vote this fall on a $65 per semester fee that would grant them access to the facility and childcare services. The project represents Columbus State's largest effort to date to replace surface parking with useful amenities, adding much-needed green space to this part of downtown. If approved, the facility would open in Fall 2028, creating what officials call a "catalyst for continued growth" in the Discovery District.
