Pickaway County • July 23, 2025
Good morning, Pickaway County. When the air quality index hits 101, it's more than just a number—it's a health warning. Central Ohio residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions, are facing hazardous conditions today as an Air Quality Alert blankets several counties. While postponing that lawn mowing session might seem inconvenient, it's one small way to help clear our collective air during this high-pressure system that's turning our summer skies hazy.
Meanwhile, a different kind of construction project is making headlines as Ohio's beloved butter cow dons a hard hat for this year's State Fair. The 2,000-pound buttery masterpiece celebrates ongoing fairground renovations with impressive detail right down to the safety cones. Closer to home, the 7 Mile Bluegrass Festival returns to Circleville with fiddles, food and fellowship—asking only for donations to support veterans rather than charging admission for the three-day musical celebration.

🌫️ Central Ohio's air turns hazardous for vulnerable residents Wednesday. Several counties face an Air Quality Alert as ozone levels reach an unhealthy index of 101 due to high pressure and sunny conditions. The alert affects Delaware, Franklin, Licking and Fairfield counties, with elderly people, children, and those with respiratory conditions at highest risk. Health officials recommend sensitive groups limit outdoor activities, especially in the afternoon when ozone levels peak. Residents can help by carpooling, refueling after 8 p.m., avoiding idling vehicles, and postponing lawn mowing until evening.
🧈 Ohio's butter cow display gets a construction-themed makeover. The iconic Ohio State Fair attraction will feature the traditional cow and calf wearing hard hats alongside three butter construction workers. Created from 2,000 pounds of butter, the display reflects ongoing renovations at the fairgrounds, including the historic Dairy Products Building. The team of Ohio sculptors spent about 400 hours crafting the detailed scene, complete with scaffolding, safety cones, and a "Pardon Our Dust" sign. Since 1903, the butter cow display has been a beloved tradition, with each year featuring a unique theme reflecting Ohio culture.
🎵 Bluegrass festival returns to Circleville with music and a mission. The 7 Mile Bluegrass Festival will bring over 20 acts to the Pickaway Agriculture & Event Center from July 24-26, 2025. Instead of charging admission, organizers ask attendees to donate food or personal care items to benefit Veterans in Transition and the Chillicothe VA. Headliners include Lonesome River Band, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, and the festival's namesake 7 Mile Bluegrass Band. On-site camping is available for those wanting to immerse themselves in this community celebration of fiddles, food, and fellowship.
