Pickaway County • July 8, 2025
Good morning, Pickaway County. A stark economic contrast is playing out across Ohio as the state grapples with the nation's fifth-worst unemployment rate at 4.9%. Despite years of tax incentives aimed at job creation, the numbers tell a troubling tale of programs that haven't delivered on their promises, even as small businesses throughout the state struggle to find qualified workers to fill their open positions.
The workforce paradox comes into sharper focus with the latest NFIB report showing 36% of small businesses had unfilled positions in June, particularly in construction and manufacturing sectors. Meanwhile, a community is in mourning following a tragic wrong-way collision that claimed the life of 34-year-old motorcyclist Isaiah Allen on State Route 161 early Monday morning. The fatal crash, which occurred near Little Turtle Way, left two others injured as Columbus police continue their investigation.

📉 Ohio's unemployment rate ranks fifth worst in the nation. At 4.9%, Ohio's jobless rate significantly trails the national average despite years of tax breaks aimed at spurring job creation. Programs like the LLC tax break, costing $1 billion annually, and JobsOhio's corporate incentives have failed to deliver promised employment gains. Meanwhile, recent tax cuts disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Ohioans, with the top 20% of households receiving 96% of the benefit. Critics question these policies as federal funding cuts loom that could further strain the state's economy.
💼 Small businesses struggle to fill job openings across Ohio. According to NFIB's latest jobs report, 36% of small business owners had unfilled positions in June, a 2-point increase from May. Finding qualified workers remains a top challenge, with 50% of hiring businesses reporting few or no qualified applicants. Job openings were highest in construction, manufacturing, and transportation industries, while a net 33% of owners reported raising compensation—the largest monthly increase since January 2020. Despite these challenges, a net 13% of small business owners plan to create new jobs in the coming months.
