Good morning, Pickaway County. With Independence Day approaching, a welcome gift awaits holiday travelers at the pump. Gas prices have dropped to a three-year low, averaging just $3.02 in Columbus—nearly 60 cents cheaper than last year. The 3.4 million Ohioans hitting the road can find prices as low as $2.59 at some locations, making that weekend getaway a bit more affordable during the summer driving season.

Nature is making unexpected appearances across our region as black bears venture into Central Ohio. Three confirmed sightings this month serve as reminders that we share our landscape with wildlife seeking new territory. Meanwhile, at OSU's Small Grains Field Day, local wheat farmers gathered to tackle challenges from fungus to fluctuating markets. Despite international uncertainties affecting Ohio's third-largest grain crop, farmers like Owen Niese remain committed to their craft, working to expand market access while adapting to changing conditions.

🌾 Ohio wheat farmers battle nature and markets to stay profitable. Around 50 farmers gathered at OSU's Small Grains Field Day seeking expert advice on challenges like fungus infestations, changing weather patterns, and rising costs. Wheat, Ohio's third-largest grain crop, faces international market uncertainties with Ukraine war impacts and global competition affecting prices. Farmers like Owen Niese are working to expand international market access, recently hosting grain mill leaders from South America and meeting with Vietnamese trade delegations. Despite these challenges, many farmers remain passionate about their work while adapting to do more with less land, equipment, and labor.

🐻 Black bears are making unexpected appearances across Central Ohio. Three confirmed sightings have occurred this month, with two bears tragically killed in vehicle collisions. Officials note that while uncommon in the region, bear activity typically peaks during June and July as young males disperse from Pennsylvania and West Virginia in search of territory. Wildlife Officer Adam Smith advises residents to remain calm during encounters, avoid eye contact, and back away slowly while making noise. Ohio's black bear population remains small, estimated between 50-100 animals statewide.
