🔌 Power pause

Good morning, Pickaway County. The scorching heat wave has pushed our regional power grid to its limits, with AEP Ohio now calling on residents to dial back electricity use during peak hours (3-7pm) today. This simple act of raising your thermostat a few degrees and postponing that load of laundry could help prevent the more drastic measure of rolling blackouts across our 13-state grid. The dangerous temperatures aren't just uncomfortable—they're testing our infrastructure's resilience.

In a stark reminder that watchdogs matter, former Columbus physician Robert Florea is heading to prison for a brazen Medicaid fraud scheme involving $1.5 million in phantom medical equipment. His conviction comes as our region loses another vital watchdog of a different kind—the Columbus Messenger newspaper chain is closing after 50 years, joining the growing list of local publications vanishing from Central Ohio's once-vibrant media landscape.

🔌 Ohio heat wave sparks urgent call to reduce power usage. AEP Ohio has asked customers to limit energy consumption during peak hours (3-7 p.m.) on Tuesday to prevent rolling blackouts. The extreme temperatures are placing "significant burden" on the 13-state electric grid that includes Ohio. Recommended actions include unplugging unused appliances, raising thermostat temperatures, and avoiding large appliances like dishwashers and ovens. The company hopes these temporary measures will help maintain grid stability during the dangerous heat.

💰 Doctor's fraud scheme earns him prison time and hefty bill. Former Columbus physician Robert Florea received a 24-month prison sentence for fraudulently billing Medicaid $1.5 million through his clinic, Buckeye Health and Research. Investigators discovered he claimed reimbursement for over 5,100 pieces of medical equipment but purchased only 460 items over a three-year period. Both Florea and his now-defunct clinic must pay $1.5 million in restitution, and he has permanently surrendered his medical license. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit led the investigation that resulted in Florea's October 2024 conviction.

📰 Local newspapers are vanishing, leaving communities without watchdogs. The Columbus Messenger chain's closure after 50 years marks another casualty in the decline of print media across Central Ohio. What was once a thriving market with dozens of publications has dwindled to just one daily paper and a few hyperlocal outlets like the Clintonville Spotlight. New models are emerging, with nonprofit organizations like Signal Ohio and digital-only operations such as Richland Source stepping in to fill the void. As one journalism expert notes, these disappearing papers were "the glue that binds a community together."
