Muskingum County • July 31, 2025
Good morning, Muskingum County. Democracy takes shape in fascinating ways, sometimes literally on a map. In Nelsonville, citizen Trevor Martin has drawn the future of local representation with a four-ward map that achieves remarkable population balance—less than 5% deviation across districts. This grassroots effort showcases how everyday residents can directly shape their government's structure, with the incoming council having 90 days to adopt the citizen-created boundaries when they take office in January.
The arts are bringing communities together across our region in creative ways. Lancaster's Festival Orchestra String Quartet is taking classical music beyond traditional venues with their "Out and About" series, recently delighting seniors at Olivedale Senior Center. Meanwhile, Newark elementary schools are preparing to introduce the LifeWise program this fall, offering optional Bible-based character education during lunch periods at Carson and Ben Franklin schools, with plans to expand to all seven elementary schools by January.

🗺️ Citizens craft Nelsonville's future with new ward map. Trevor Martin, with help from the League of Women Voters, presented a four-ward map to the city council that will take office in January. The citizen-drawn map achieves less than 5% population deviation, meaning residents are equally distributed across wards. Starting January 1, the new council will have 90 days to adopt any ward map as an ordinance, or the public service director will make subdivisions. While all council members will be elected at-large in the upcoming election, candidates can run for specific wards in November 2027.
🎻 Orchestra brings music to the people of Lancaster. The Lancaster Festival Orchestra String Quartet is delighting audiences across the city as part of their "Out and About" series. Musicians are performing in various community venues, recently entertaining seniors at the Olivedale Senior Center on July 30, 2025. This innovative approach brings classical music directly to diverse audiences who might not otherwise attend traditional concert venues. The series exemplifies how orchestras can break down barriers and connect with communities through accessible performances.
📖 Bible-based LifeWise program enters Newark elementary schools this fall. The initiative will begin at Carson and Ben Franklin schools for fourth and fifth graders, with plans to expand to all seven Newark elementary schools by January. Students will attend once weekly during lunch and recess at nearby off-site locations, where they'll receive Bible lessons and character education. While supported by many parents and already operating in other Ohio districts, some opponents worry about religious coercion in public schools. Participation requires parental enrollment and is completely optional.
