Muskingum County • June 16, 2025
Good morning, Muskingum County. History has a way of slipping through our fingers when not carefully preserved. Thanks to amateur historian George B. Smythe, rare glimpses into African American experiences in early Newark have survived despite the documentation challenges of the era. His "Early Recollections of Newark" offers valuable insights into forgotten stories like Jeremiah Nuby Stanton's – providing a precious window into Black history that might otherwise have been lost to time.
Summer events are blooming across the region faster than June wildflowers. From First Christian Church's upcoming rummage sale to the Shaw Brothers' folk performance in New Concord, there's something for everyone. Meanwhile, Muskingum University welcomes Molly Dunn as its first associate VP for external engagement, the Cambridge Amateur Radio Association prepares for a 24-hour field exercise, and Coshocton residents should note Road 22 closures while marking their calendars for the Community Band's march performances on June 20.

📚 Amateur historian preserved rare Black history in early Newark. George B. Smythe's "Early Recollections of Newark" documented African American experiences often ignored by white historians in Licking County. Despite using some offensive language typical of his era, Smythe recorded valuable stories like that of Jeremiah Nuby Stanton, mistakenly called Jeremiah Newby in his writings. Research has corrected these historical inaccuracies, offering rare glimpses into Black lives when such documentation was scarce. A program on "African American Roots in Licking County" will be presented at the Newark library on June 17.
📅 Guernsey County gears up for a week of community events. First Christian Church will host a rummage and bake sale on July 12, while the Shaw Brothers will perform folk music at New Concord Village Park on June 24. In university news, Molly Dunn has been appointed as Muskingum University's first associate vice president for external engagement, where she'll expand regional partnerships and strengthen educational opportunities. Meanwhile, the Cambridge Amateur Radio Association will participate in a 24-hour field exercise starting June 28, and several local organizations have scheduled meetings for the upcoming week.
📅 Coshocton County announces key events and closures for the week. County Road 22 will close daily June 16-17 for culvert replacements, while the Community Band performs marches on June 20. Residents can donate blood at Roscoe United Methodist Church on June 27, and non-traditional students have until July 11 to apply for various scholarships through the Coshocton Foundation. Other highlights include a contemporary quilt exhibit running through September 1 at the Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum and the Hometown Perks program encouraging local shopping.
