Muskingum County • February 21, 2025
Good morning, Muskingum County. In the cold light of a winter morning, our community wakes to sobering news of a devastating crash on County Road 7, reminding us how quickly life can change on our rural roads. As we keep the affected families in our thoughts, it's a stark reminder to embrace each day and each other with care and compassion.
Meanwhile, local democracy is stirring conversations across coffee shops and council chambers, as Coshocton weighs doubling their council terms. It's part of a broader dialogue about civic engagement happening throughout our region, even as our neighbors in Tuscarawas Valley continue processing their own tragedy with new developments in last November's bus crash case.

🚗 Late-night crash claims life on rural Ohio road. A tragic single-vehicle accident on County Road 7 in Muskingum County left 48-year-old Eric Perry dead after his vehicle overturned down an embankment Wednesday night. Perry was partially ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, 40-year-old Shane Carpenter, was fully ejected and rushed to Genesis Hospital with life-threatening injuries. As of Thursday morning, Carpenter remained in critical condition at Grant Medical Center in Columbus.
🗳️ Coshocton City Council debates doubling term lengths amid public skepticism. Council members are considering switching from two-year to four-year terms and implementing staggered elections to prevent complete turnover. While some residents worry about the optics given current political distrust, Mayor Mark Mills notes voters would ultimately decide the change. The lack of council candidates this year - with only incumbents running - adds another layer to the debate. Council plans to consult local political committees before deciding whether to put the measure on fall's ballot.
🚌 Deadly Ohio bus crash trial delayed as new evidence emerges. Semi-truck driver Jacob McDonald, charged with killing six people in a November 2023 crash involving a Tuscarawas Valley school bus, will now face trial in May instead of February. McDonald faces 26 charges, including six counts of aggravated vehicular homicide, after his truck plowed into a charter bus carrying students and chaperones. While investigators found no drug or alcohol impairment, prosecutors are examining phone data suggesting possible video streaming minutes before the crash. McDonald remains held on $1 million bond as authorities piece together the tragic incident that claimed three teens and three adults.
Defense was the name of the game as Tri-Valley smothered Steubenville 43-15, holding their opponents to single digits in three quarters. The Scotties (21-3) continue their dominant season while West Muskingum made a statement of their own, crushing Edison 67-30 across town. Meanwhile, Morgan and West Holmes picked up road wins, with the Raiders doubling up Maysville 48-24 and the Knights squeaking past Philo 35-28 in what must have been a game only a mother could love.
