🥫 Hungry community

Montgomery County • May 30, 2025

Good morning, Montgomery County. The numbers tell a sobering story: one in seven residents across our region struggled to put nutritious food on the table last year. As inflation pushes grocery prices skyward and pandemic-era support programs vanish, The Foodbank Inc. faces difficult choices about how to distribute diminishing resources. This growing food insecurity crisis reveals the hidden struggles many neighbors face behind closed doors, even as our community continues to evolve in other ways.

Meanwhile, the local real estate landscape continues shifting in notable ways. Washington Township's medical facility changed hands for $1.8 million in April, adding to recent commercial property transactions across the area. At the same time, the luxury home market has hit a decade-low slump during what should be the bustling spring selling season. These contrasting trends paint a complex picture of Montgomery County's evolving economic terrain as we move deeper into 2024.

🍽️ Food insecurity is rising in Ohio's Dayton region. Over one in seven people in Greene, Preble, and Montgomery counties struggled to access nutritious food in 2023, according to the Map the Meal Gap study. Around 1.8 million Ohioans faced food insecurity that year, with only 44% qualifying for SNAP benefits. The Foodbank Inc. reports that inflation and food prices are outpacing wages, while federal support programs that helped during the pandemic have been reduced. With funding cuts continuing, the organization warns they may need to reduce food variety to ensure distribution reaches all communities in need.
