Meigs County • October 1, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. They say one person's eyesore is another's opportunity for renewal. Wood County is proving this adage true as they tackle dilapidated structures through state-funded demolitions, allowing property owners to keep their land while removing hazardous buildings that have long plagued neighborhoods in Waverly and Williamstown. With seven properties already cleared and more on the horizon before year's end, the landscape is literally changing for the better.
Literature lovers can treasure hunt at Trinity Episcopal Church's annual book sale this week, where rare finds and gems await—including door prize "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire, perfectly timed with the film adaptation's release. Meanwhile, Community Bank's Free Shred Day offers both security and an opportunity to give back this Saturday. While your sensitive documents meet their end, new socks, hats and gloves for local students will find their beginning—a fitting circle of community care as we head toward Halloween.

🏚️ Wood County tackles dangerous eyesores with demolition funds. The Commission has put two dilapidated structures up for bid, utilizing state DEP grant money to remove abandoned buildings in Waverly and Williamstown. Both properties—an old farmhouse with 13 openings and a house damaged by a fallen tree—have cooperative owners who were unaware such assistance existed. The county has already cleaned up seven properties through this program, which allows owners to retain their land while removing hazardous structures. Officials hope to complete three or four more demolitions before the grant expires on December 31.
📚 Trinity Episcopal Church's book sale offers door prize and literary treasures. The annual event runs Wednesday through Saturday at the Juliana Street location in Parkersburg, featuring thousands of publications including rare finds. This year's door prize is Gregory Maguire's "Wicked," the basis for the recent film adaptation. The expanded "gems" section showcases discounted rare volumes, West Virginia history books, and pre-1940 publications. Proceeds support community outreach programs including food assistance and choir scholarships.
