Meigs County • June 4, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. Democracy takes a vibrant new form in Nelsonville, where residents now hold the power to literally redraw their political landscape. The city's transition from charter to statutory government has opened the door for citizens to create and submit their own ward maps, transforming how they'll be represented on the council. This grassroots approach to redistricting puts the community's pen directly on the political blueprint that will shape their future governance.
Meanwhile, spiritual harmonies will soon fill the air along the Ohio River as gospel star Ivan Parker headlines the fourth annual "Praise Along the River" event on June 29. As this riverside tradition continues to grow—drawing over 200 worshippers last year—the Athens County elections office prepares for a transition of its own. After an impressive 33-year career, Director Debbie Quivey is stepping down from a position she described as a labor of love, having never once dreaded going to work.

🗺️ Nelsonville citizens gain power to redraw their political map. Residents can now create and submit their own ward maps for the city's transition from charter to statutory government. Under the new system, four of seven council members will represent specific wards instead of serving at-large. Trevor Martin from the Ohio League of Women Voters is guiding this transparent process, aiming to present a community-created map to the council in July. While some residents see progress in community involvement, others worry about balancing community priorities against individual interests as the city works toward implementing the voter-approved changes.
🙏 Gospel star Ivan Parker headlines Point Pleasant's riverside praise event. The fourth annual "Praise Along the River" returns to Riverfront Park on June 29, continuing a tradition started by former Mayor Brian Billings in 2022. Attendance has grown each year, with over 200 people gathering for worship along the Ohio River. Parker, a renowned soloist known for his work with the Gaither Homecoming series and his signature song "Midnight Cry," will perform after opening acts and a guest speaker. The first 200 attendees will receive free wooden cross keychains, with free water and prize drawings throughout the evening.
🗳️ Athens County elections director retires after 33-year career. Debbie Quivey, who served as director for 20 years before becoming deputy director, will officially retire on July 25 after beginning as a clerk in 1992. The Athens County Board of Elections accepted her resignation with gratitude, with current Director Tony Brooks calling her "an incredible mentor." Quivey expressed that her job was a labor of love, noting she never once dreaded going to work because she disliked her position. The board is now accepting applications for a new Republican deputy elections director until June 13.
