Meigs County • May 14, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. Parkersburg's streets are getting a major facelift starting today as crews roll out an ambitious $152,513 preservation project. This 60-day initiative will rejuvenate nearly 9 miles of roadways, part of a larger $2 million paving strategy designed to extend the life of city streets. Residents should keep an eye out for notification flyers and street banners before work begins in their neighborhoods—the entire project could wrap up in as little as five days if Mother Nature cooperates.
Beyond infrastructure improvements, the community is tackling deeper challenges with impressive coordination. Seven specialized action teams have formed to address homelessness through a unified approach, preventing service duplication while maximizing impact. Meanwhile, young environmentalists can look forward to summer 2025, when Ohio University's Green Project Camp returns with age-specific programs teaching children about conservation through hands-on activities and field trips—planting seeds for a more sustainable future.

🛣️ Parkersburg kicks off massive street preservation project today. The $152,513.85 asphalt rejuvenation contract with Pavement Technology Inc. will treat 8.85 miles of city streets over the next 60 days. This initiative is part of a larger $2,038,000 paving strategy that includes crack filling, micro surfacing, and traditional paving. City Council will vote tonight on allocating an additional $500,000 to cover cost overages attributed to new preservation techniques and rising asphalt prices. Residents can expect flyers and street banners to notify them before work begins on their streets, with the entire project potentially finishing in as little as five days, weather permitting.
🏠 Parkersburg tackles homelessness with community action teams. Seven specialized groups formed during a town hall meeting at First United Methodist Church to coordinate efforts helping the unhoused. Joseph Bradford III, who traveled from Los Angeles where he houses 200 homeless individuals, shared his expertise and personal experience with homelessness. Michele VanMetre is organizing the initiative under the Parkersburg Homelessness Action Council, creating a "unified umbrella" to prevent service duplication. The teams will focus on events, mentorship, maintenance, professional services, finances, resource management, and food distribution.
