Meigs County • May 6, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. Spring cleaning has arrived in full force as Lubeck Public Service District crews tackle fire hydrant maintenance through June. This essential work ensures our emergency infrastructure stays reliable, though residents might notice temporary water discoloration – a small price to pay for community safety. Just remember to run those cold taps first if your water takes on a brownish tint during the maintenance period.
In the "what not to do" files, two separate incidents highlight the consequences of poor decisions. Christopher Williams' request for a deputy ride turned into drug charges when officers spotted paraphernalia in plain view, while Laikin Williams received three years of federal probation for illegally purchasing a firearm for someone else. These "straw purchases" might seem harmless on the surface, but they carry serious legal implications designed to keep weapons out of the wrong hands.

🚒 Lubeck fire hydrants get a spring cleaning through June. The Lubeck Public Service District began flushing hydrants on May 5, with work continuing for the next month between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. This maintenance ensures hydrants remain operational while removing buildup of iron and manganese oxides from water lines. Residents may temporarily experience discolored water, pressure loss, or no water during the process. If brown water appears, officials recommend running cold water until it clears before using hot water.
💊 Man asks deputy for ride, gets arrested with drugs instead. Christopher Williams was initially cleared of involvement in a larceny when a Wood County deputy spotted a "tooter" straw in his pocket. A search revealed white powder that Williams called "swerve," street slang for fentanyl. After being transported to the holding center, another baggie of white powder was discovered in his sweatpants. Authorities are now seeking additional charges for bringing controlled substances into a jail facility.
🔫 Parkersburg man buys gun for someone else, gets probation. Laikin Williams, 25, received three years of federal probation after pleading guilty to making a false statement when purchasing a firearm. Court documents revealed that in August 2022, Williams bought a Taurus 9mm pistol at a Parkersburg business while falsely certifying on ATF forms that he was the actual buyer. He admitted to investigators that he purchased the weapon for another individual, constituting what's known as a "straw purchase" - an illegal transaction where someone buys a firearm on behalf of another person.
