🎓 Brainpower brigade

Meigs County • March 26, 2025

Good morning, Meigs County. Academic excellence is shining brightly across our region as 33 local students achieved what many consider the academic equivalent of a perfect game—earning flawless 4.0 GPAs at Ohio University. These dedicated scholars from communities throughout Lawrence County represent the pinnacle of student achievement while balancing full course loads of at least 12 credit hours, proving that our hometown talent continues to impress at the collegiate level.

Beyond the classroom, transformations are happening throughout our area. Ohio University's Student Senate has overhauled outdated rules from the 1990s to create better accountability and transparency, while Devil's Kettle Brewery has reimagined a riverside car lot into a community gathering space where craft beer flows and local musicians perform. The brewery even donates spent grain to nearby farms—a perfect example of the sustainable, community-minded spirit that makes our region special.

📝 Ohio University Student Senate overhauls outdated rules for better accountability. A special committee has revised the Rules and Procedures document, which hadn't been significantly updated since the 1990s. The changes come after last year's near "breakdown of the Senate" involving impeachment and transparency issues. Key reforms include a two-strike system replacing monetary fines for election violations, reduced campaign spending limits, clarified violation types, and improved transparency laws. Senate President Dan Gordillo hopes these reforms will ensure stability and less drama, saying, "If you find yourself asking, 'I haven't heard any drama from the Senate recently,' now you know why."

🍺 Ohio brewery turns riverside car lot into vibrant community hub. Devil's Kettle Brewery, opened by Cameron Fuller in 2015, serves craft beers, pierogies, and German sausages from its Columbus Road location in Athens. The brewery donates spent grain to local farms like Wildcat Ridge, supporting sustainable agriculture while reducing waste. Live music from local artists adds to the relaxed atmosphere, with bands like Fine Business regularly performing for patrons. Fuller credits the Athens community—locals, families, and students—for making his brewery a success and helping him feel truly part of the town.
