Her prize-winning recitations have earned her school $500 for poetry materials and secured her place among the nation's most talented young wordsmiths – proving that our region's artistic talents reach far beyond state lines.
March is bringing a burst of cultural festivities to our area, from the toe-tapping Irish tunes at Jackie O's Taproom Hooley on March 14th to the bend-and-snap excitement of "Legally Blonde: The Musical" at Parkersburg South High School. Whether you're raising a pint while singing traditional folk songs or watching Elle Woods charm her way through Harvard Law School, there's no shortage of ways to shake off winter's chill with community celebrations that showcase local talent.

📝 West Virginia teen wins state poetry contest, heads to nationals. Emily Porter from Logan High School will represent West Virginia at the 2025 Poetry Out Loud National Finals in Washington, D.C. She impressed judges with recitations of poems by Mariana Llanos, Mary Weston Fordham, and Laura Da'. Porter will receive $200 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the capital, while her school gets $500 for poetry materials. The competition engaged over 2,800 students from 45 West Virginia high schools, promoting poetry appreciation through memorization and performance.
🎵 Irish tunes and brews await at Jackie O's Taproom Hooley. The free community singalong event takes place March 14 from 6:00-9:00 pm at the Athens venue, featuring traditional Irish, Scottish, and English songs with lyrics provided. Performers include Conor and Hillary Hartwick, Jules and Krista Brewer, Tristan Olson, and Maryann and Russ Hartwick. Attendees can enjoy beverages from Jackie O's alongside food from Bagel Street Deli while participating in this festive musical gathering.
🎭 Parkersburg South brings "Legally Blonde" musical to life this March. The high school's Theatre Department will stage the award-winning production over two weekends, with performances on March 14-16 and 21-22. Student Brianna Stump stars as Elle Woods, the determined protagonist who charms her way into Harvard Law School after being dumped by her boyfriend. The PG-13 musical, based on the popular novel and film starring Reese Witherspoon, follows Elle's journey as she overcomes stereotypes and discovers her true potential. Tickets range from $8-10, with a special dinner theater fundraiser scheduled for March 15.
